Welcome to the Teaming with Wildlife Public Outreach Initiative
Thank you for your commitment to help lead the next generation of the Teaming with Wildlife Coalition. In the 1990’s more than 3,000 groups came together under the banner of Teaming with Wildlife and issued a call for action that Congress could not ignore. These efforts have since secured over $600 million through the State Wildlife Grants Program to keep wildlife from becoming endangered in every state. This toolkit contains a treasure trove of resources to help you build on this success and we’re excited to have you as part of this historic effort.
The completion of state wildlife action plans by every state gives us an unprecedented opportunity to take Teaming with Wildlife to the next level and secure increased and reliable funding for wildlife conservation. While we continue to seek increased State Wildlife Grants appropriations to put real money on the ground, several measures are under consideration in Congress that would provide adequate and reliable federal funding for the long-term. Our Congressional champions are eager to take the next step.
We also believe the time is ripe to pursue legislative bills and ballot initiatives creating significant new funding mechanisms for wildlife conservation at the state level. Arizona, Arkansas, Missouri and Virginia have secured mechanisms generating over $130 million a year. More recently, New Jersey and Iowa have secured general fund appropriations. The state wildlife action plans lay the groundwork for similar initiatives across the nation.
To take advantage of these opportunities, we need to work together to strengthen our state Teaming with Wildlife coalitions around the goal of securing full implementation of and necessary funding for our wildlife action plans. Fortunately, you don’t have to take this on alone. State affiliates of national groups like National Wildlife Federation and The Nature Conservancy are eager to help you lead this effort, and we collectively engaged thousands of stakeholders to develop the wildlife action plans. These organizations and individuals are not just part of writing the plans, they all have a stake in seeing our efforts succeed and can be our most dedicated advocates on the state and federal levels.
In the year since we launched this renewed effort, we've nearly doubled the coalition, far exceeding our goal of 5,000 members by the 2007 Teaming with Wildlife Fly-in Day. With engaged stakeholders, our existing coalition partners, a proven track record of success and your leadership, there's nothing we can't achieve. This toolkit provides the resources you need to create an effective coalition to pursue wildlife conservation opportunities in the coming years.
Best wishes for your coalition!
